HOW ACT MAKES A DIFFERENCE: RACHIDA'S STORY
Rachida migrated to Canada from Africa in 2008 as a refugee claimant. On December 15, as a result of medical testing conducted as part of the landing process, Rachida learned she was HIV-positive. “I was shocked, but ACT helped me get on my feet. Everyone was very welcoming and non-judgemental,” says Rachida. “Counselling sessions helped me realize I’m not alone and I accessed services to help me move forward in my life.”
Rachida connected with a case manager at ACT and things started to improve. She began to access practical services like the Good Food Box and the Furniture Bank, and received assistance applying for ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program). Rachida was building a new life for herself in Toronto with the dream of her three children joining her here one day. “I wouldn’t have gotten through without ACT. They empowered me to become the woman I am today.” Rachida’s case manager was an aid to her through the refugee claim process and even attended her hearing.
Rachida also found Employment Action very helpful. “They provided access to training so I could improve my typing skills and navigate Microsoft Office. Employment Action also helped me with my resumé and with my job search.”
“Thank you to ACT staff and volunteers for their help every step of the way,” says Rachida. “They have always provided a homey space where I could access information and find encouragement. I always felt safe and there were times I almost didn’t want to leave.”
To others living with HIV/AIDS, Rachida offers some encouragement of her own: “Life goes on. I’m now in a relationship with an HIV-negative partner and he’s very supportive. I’m very happy.”
